How to Practice Body Positivity Summer is upon us, and that means shorter hemlines, exposed skin, and swimsuits. I am here to tell you that you are beautiful and perfect just the way that you are! It is easy to get in your head and doubt how beautiful you are, but there is no reason to and no reason to compare ourselves to others. You are who you are.
Listen I am not going to sit here and pretend that I do not suffer from body image issues. I question myself, literally on a daily basis. To be completely honest, I don’t know many people who don’t. It is only human and completely natural. It is something that I work on every day; to love and accept myself just the way that I am.
Here are some easy steps you can take today to love yourself for who you are and embrace yourself!
CELEBRATE YOUR BODY
Our bodies are so amazing and capable of more than we give them credit for. They help us to reach our goals, heal us, help us to think/process, and protect us every day. So let’s stop putting them down and start celebrating them.
It is so easy to look at others: friends, family, and strangers on the street and compare ourselves to them. The reality of the situation is that we all have our own issues and insecurities. What you hate about yourself may be the thing that others are jealous of. We are all special in our own way. So next time these thoughts surface, I want you to pause and remember what is amazing about you. Never forget you are beautiful.
TUNE OUT THE MEDIA
Most of what we see on social media and in magazines is not real. It is often edited and photoshopped. You can not compare yourself to these unrealistic expectations. When it gets overwhelming, it is okay to take a break from social media, your mental health is way more important.
REMIND YOURSELF HOW AMAZING YOU ARE
Sometimes when we are having a bad day we just need to step back and remind ourselves of how amazing we are. An easy way to do this is to simply pause and write down 3 things that you love about yourself. Make this a normal practice in your life, it will help to shift your mindset.
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVITY
We do not need to surround ourselves with negative people who point out our flaws, but instead seek out those who bring us up and remind us of how amazing we truly are and see us in a way that sometimes we can’t. Take the negative people in your life and throw them away along with your negative thoughts about yourself.
CREATE YOUR OWN MANTRA
Have your own mantra; something that you repeat to yourself when you are having an off day or just need that little boost. My mantra is “I am enough,” but here are some others you can try out:
-I love my body
-I am beautiful
-I got a great butt
-I like/love me.
-I am not perfect and that is okay.
-I love the woman staring back at me in the mirror
-I will treat my body with respect
-My body is my home and I will build it up, not tear it down.
You are so worth it, so this should be easy.
